King's Sutton Pre-school Playgroup is very proud to have been awarded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in July 2010. The playgroup offers a friendly and welcoming environment for young children and their parents, and an opportunity for children to participate in a wide range of activities and experiences. The staff support a ‘free-flow’ approach to children’s time in Playgroup. During each session, children are able to choose from a variety of activities – either ‘free’ play (dressing up, sandpit, painting, slide, construction toys, etc.) or supervised such as a craft, gardening or cookery.
There’s a wide range of resources available including writing and drawing materials, paints, clay, sand and water trays, puzzles and construction toys. The home corner houses a wide variety of dolls and make-believe toys. The computer corner allows children to discover the rudiments of using a computer as well as helping edit photographs for the Scrap Book. Numbers rule in the numeracy corner and, during a long session, the book corner with its piles of cushions and books makes a welcome break.
Music and Movement play an important role in our busy day. The children will learn new songs and dances, act out mini dramas, do yoga stretches one day and belly dancing the next! All willing participants are up on their feet and active.
Outside the children are able to choose from bikes, trikes, balls, hoops etc. This helps develop their physical skills and co-ordination. Safety helmets are provided, and the children remain under the usual close supervision. There is an enclosed grassed garden allowing the children a further choice of activities, and also a small garden where the children are able to plant vegetables, herbs and flowers, and observe the insect life.
Outings are planned throughout the term to encourage the children to explore and discover the community in which they live. Outings have included trips to the Post Office, local gardens and shops, churches and carol singing for the elderly. During outings the ratio is increased with the help of parents/carers to ensure complete safety, especially when crossing roads. A full risk assessment is always carried out before any outing is undertaken.
