New Boxing Academy Provides Coaching For Young People

February 17th, 2012

Young people in the district aged between 14 and 25 will be able to learn basic boxing skills and techniques at a new academy being launched by South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) next week with funding from Sport England’s Sportivate initiative. The new, 8-week programme starts next week in Towcester and Brackley, in partnership with the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) and South Northants Leisure Trust. (The Sportivate programme is designed to encourage young people to be more active and get involved with sport in the run-up to London 2012.)

Councillor Rosie Herring, portfolio holder for community wellbeing, says: “[The new boxing academy] is great news for the young people in Brackley and Towcester, as there is currently limited boxing provision across the county and it will be an excellent way for young people to get into sport. Boxing has been an Olympic sport since 1904, and women’s boxing will feature as a full Olympic medal event for the first time this year... I would definitely encourage young people in the district to give it a go, as it’s a fun and interesting way of keeping fit and a great way to learn a new set of skills.”

Boxing academy courses start at Towcester Centre for Leisure on Monday, February 20, 16:30-17:30, and Thursday, February 23, 17:00-18:00 at Brackley Leisure Centre. Sessions cost £2 per week and the programme will be delivered by a Level 2 instructor with a wealth of boxing experience.

Places are limited for the initial eight week programme, so anyone interested in participating should register now with South Northants Council's sports development team on 01327 322078 or email Tom Kittendorf using the SNC Sportivate email link in the Quick Contacts section of this website.
